Lactoferrin up-regulates the immune system by regulating iron in the body, with the Apolactoferrin form functioning specifically to lower iron levels. Lactoferrin also acts as a direct anti-viral, interfering with E2 [the docking protein in the viral coat of the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV)] that allows the virus to latch onto hepatocytes (liver cells).

Cautions: If you have iron-deficient anemia, do not take Life Extension Apolactoferrin, which is recommended for patients with high iron. Other brands of Lactoferrin than Life Extension Apolactoferrin that contain iron are the proper treatment for patients with iron deficiency.

What It does/How it Works:

Lacto means milk and ferrin means iron in Latin. This comes from the fact that Lactoferrin is found in colostrum, the first milk that a mother produces, because the immune system of a pregnant woman is down-regulated to not reject the fetus as an antigen, and the presence of Lactoferrin helps to upregulate the immune system of her newborn baby.

Lactoferrin modulates the immune system by enhancing natural killer cells and binding directly to viral receptors.

Lactoferrin has been shown in a Japanese study to significantly lower viral load in Hepatitis C patients. Peptides from Lactoferrin bind to E2, which is a protein found in the viral envelope, preventing it from latching on to hepatocytes. Minimum effective dose in this study was 1600 mg.

Lactoferrin regulates iron levels in the body. Since iron is needed for bacterial growth, Lactoferrin can snuff out bacterial infections by depriving bacteria of the iron they need to live.

Controlling iron levels is necessary in the treatment of Hepatitis C, because excessive iron build-up fans the flames of inflammation in Hep C.
